How To Style Straight Leg Jeans
I’m sure almost everyone has heard by now that Gen Z has declared skinny jeans are no longer “in.” And that straight-leg jeans and bootcut style denim is where it’s now at. I can’t say I entirely agree with that. I’ll always love high-rise skinny jeans tucked into a pair of tall, sleek boots. I can promise you won’t catch me tossing mine out anytime soon. But I have to say, I do enjoy changing up my style depending on my mood. For this reason, I’m very happy that other denim silhouettes like mom jeans, bootcut jeans, wide-leg, and straight-leg jeans have all returned. This is a denim trend I can fully embrace.
In Los Angeles, denim is pretty much the daily dress code, so having so many options is nice! That said, let’s talk about some of the best tips and different ways to style your straight-leg denim.
How To Find The Perfect Straight-Leg Jeans
Finding The Right Length
Finding the right length of jeans involves considering your height, preferred style, and the type of shoes you’ll typically wear with them. Here’s how you can find the perfect length.
1. Consider Different Length Options
- Jeans come in various lengths, including short, regular, long, and extra-long. Some brands also offer specific inseam lengths in inches (e.g., 30″, 32″, 34″, etc.). This is great for those with petite frames or who are taller than average.
- Short lengths are typically designed for individuals with shorter inseams, while long and extra-long lengths are suitable for taller individuals.
2. Decide on Your Preferred Hem Style
- Jeans come in different hem styles, such as straight, bootcut, skinny, and flared. The hem style can affect how the jeans fit around your ankles and shoes.
- Straight leg denim typically falls straight down from the knee to the ankle and can be versatile with various shoe styles.
- Bootcut hems flare slightly at the bottom, allowing room for boots or larger shoes.
- Skinny hems are snug around the ankle and work well with ankle boots or heels.
- Flared hems widen from the knee to the ankle and are ideal for wearing with heels or platforms.
3. Try On Different Lengths
- When shopping for jeans, try on multiple lengths to see which one fits best. Pay attention to how the jeans fall on your legs and whether they reach the desired length. An ankle-length pair of jeans looks very different from a full-length pair, but really, it’s just a matter of personal preference.
- A pro style tip is to wear or bring along the shoes you’ll most likely pair with the jeans to ensure the length complements your footwear choice.
The Best Rise For Your Body Shape
I get why some people hate shopping for pants. There are so many options available, and knowing what type of jeans looks best on you can be hard to figure out without trying on dozens of pairs first. Finding the best rise for your body when shopping for jeans involves considering several factors, such as your body shape, comfort preferences, and personal style. Here are some styling tips to help you find the right rise.
1. Understand the Different Rise Options
- High Rise: Sits at or above the natural waistline, typically around belly button level.
- Mid Rise: Sits between the natural waistline and hips, around the belly button or slightly below.
- Low Rise: Sits below the natural waistline, closer to the hips.
2. Know Your Body Shape
- For those with longer torsos or fuller figures, high-rise jeans can provide good coverage and support while making your legs appear longer.
- Mid-rise jeans are versatile and generally flattering on many body types.
- Lower rise jeans can elongate the torso and are often preferred by individuals with shorter torsos.
3. Consider Comfort and Coverage
- High-rise jeans can provide more coverage and support, especially if you prefer not to pull up your jeans constantly.
- Mid-rise jeans balance coverage and comfort and are suitable for everyday wear.
- Low-rise jeans may feel more relaxed but require frequent adjustment, especially if you’re active throughout the day.
4. Try Different Styles and Brands
- Different brands and styles within each rise category can fit differently. Experiment with various brands and cuts to find what suits you best.
- Pay attention to how the rise affects the fit around your waist, hips, and bum.
5. Consider Your Outfit and Occasion
- The rise of your jeans can impact the overall look of your outfit. High-rise jeans, for example, can pair well with crop tops or tucked-in shirts.
- Consider the occasion you’re dressing for; high-rise jeans can feel more formal, while low-rise jeans may be more suitable for casual settings.
- Also, consider the color of your jeans when picking out an outfit. A dark pair of jeans with a high rise will feel more formal, whereas a light wash will feel more casual.
6. Ask for Assistance
- If you’re still unsure of the most flattering pants, don’t hesitate to ask store associates for guidance. They can often provide insights into different styles and fits that may work well for your body type. You might leave the store with your new favorite pair of jeans.
How To Style Straight Leg Jeans
Because straight-leg jeans don’t have stretch, ladies with thicker legs, like me, might have to take an extra step to get the perfect fit. I have found the easiest way to do this is to go up a few sizes in this style of jeans to get the looser fit in my legs and butt, then take them to the tailor to have the waist brought in. The extra work and $45 tailor bill are, of course, annoying, so I only do this with my favorite pairs of jeans. B I prefer this to always having to wear a belt. And I hate the waist gap of ill-fitting jeans even more than the extra expense.
I also opt for a high waist denim and avoid cropped styles. I know it’s not the case for everyone, but my legs need all the length they can get! And I feel like a wider leg combined with a cropped fit equals stubby legs. Keep in mind when trying pants on that they are supposed to be loose on your leg.
The great thing about denim is that you can dress it up or down depending on what you accessorize with. Here are a few ways that I like to style straight jeans.
Straight Leg Jeans Outfit Ideas
With a Button Down Shirt
Wearing straight-leg jeans with a button-down shirt is a go-to choice for those seeking a chic and effortlessly put-together look. Especially during the warmer spring and summer months. This combination offers a perfect balance between casual and polished. This outfit gives off a cool vibe that’s suitable for a variety of occasions, from casual outings to more formal settings. Whether tucked in for a sleek look or left untucked for a relaxed vibe, this is the perfect combo that requires minimal effort.
With a Body Suit
A pair of straight-leg jeans with a bodysuit creates a chic outfit that effortlessly combines comfort with style. The clean lines of straight-leg jeans elongate the leg line, and the simplicity of the form-fitting top complements the tailored look of the jeans, providing a flattering silhouette. Whether you want to dress up with high heels and statement jewelry or keep it casual with white sneakers and a jacket, a pair of straight-leg jeans and a bodysuit will always look good.
With a Tank Top
A lighter wash and some distressing make these pants perfect for an everyday casual outfit. They’re especially cute and comfortable when paired with a tank top during the summer or under a lightweight blazer or jacket. Wear them with your favorite sneakers or sandals. You’ll be cute and comfortable hanging out with friends, running errands, or strolling through the city. Grab your shades and purse, and you’re good to go!
With a Blazer
The tailored silhouette of the blazer adds structure and sophistication to the relaxed fit of the jeans, resulting in a balanced and versatile look suitable for various occasions. Whether opting for a classic black blazer for a timeless appeal or experimenting with bold colors or patterns for a modern twist, this combination offers endless possibilities for personal expression. Wear it over a plain white tee and dress it up with heels, or keep it casual with sneakers. A linen blazer is perfect for summer, while a heavier wool blazer is better for the colder months of fall and winter month.
A good blazer is a wardrobe staple and an investment piece that every woman should own. If you don’t have one yet, here are a few of my favourite styles and brands.
- Cos
- Aritzia
- Banana Republic
With a Corset or Crop Top
Corset tops are having a moment right now, and I’m so here for it! Not only are they perfect for date night, but you can pair them with anything, even sweatpants, and have a great outfit. Danielle Guizio makes some beautiful ones in both neutral and bright colors. If wearing crop tees are outside of your comfort zone, you can use an oversized button down or flannel shirt to cover more of your top half. This is a great way to create the same cute look but feel more covered.
Anyways, back to jeans! If you wear them un-cuffed, wear them with a tall heel or boots to elongate your legs. And keep in mind that a light wash is less casual. Depending on your vibe, you might want to think about that. Do your hair and makeup, and add a small purse or clutch and you should be good to go!
With a White T-Shirt
The relaxed fit of straight leg pants and the laid-back vibe of the T-shirt makes this outfit comfortable and practical as well as the perfect choice for everyday wear.
You can wear this outfit with strappy heels and statement accessories or keep it casual with sneakers and a lightweight jacket. From a well-fitting white T-shirt to a graphic tee, this combination offers endless possibilities for personalization. You can tuck oversized shirts into the top of your jeans.
Straight Leg Jean With a Trench Coat
Wearing straight-leg jeans with a trench coat creates a sophisticated and timeless outfit that effortlessly blends casual comfort with classic elegance. I especially love wearing a traditional khaki trench coat in the spring and fall. If you want some additional warmth, you can layer the trench over a simple shirt or a sweater. Sneakers, a baseball cap, and a crossbody bag will keep the outfit casual or sporty. And for a more elevated look, opt for ankle boots and a statement bag.
Straight Leg Jeans With a Leather Jacket
Whether opting for a classic black leather jacket for a timeless appeal or experimenting with different colors and styles for a modern twist, I love this combination and its endless possibilities for personal expression. The combination of rugged denim and soft leather creates a visually appealing contrast, making it a go-to choice for achieving a chic but rebellious vibe. A leather jacket is another classic item to have in your closet. Here are a few that I think are a great option.
With a Sweater
As a person who’s always cold, straight-leg jeans with a sweater have long been my go-to uniform. The relaxed fit of the jeans provides a casual foundation, while the warmth and texture of the sweater add depth and interest to the outfit. Opt for a chunky knit or baggy sweater for a cozy vibe or choose a sleek, form-fitting sweater for a more polished look. Dress up with boots or heels for a sophisticated feel, or keep it casual with sneakers or flats for a relaxed weekend look.
Happy Hour/ Evening Out With Friends
This is honestly my favorite way to style straight-leg jeans! Looking sexy in comfortable clothes…yes please! Wear a small crop top, tank top, or silk camisole under a cardigan or blazer. Or you can wear a nice blouse and leave off the extra layers. Just be sure if the blouse is loose, you tuck it in at the waist and cinch with a belt to create curves. You can wear your pants long or cuff them right above the ankle. Wear them with some tall heels or strappy sandals.
Straight Leg Jean Weekend Outfit
A straight-leg jean outfit makes for the perfect weekend look due to its effortless style and comfort. The relaxed fit of the jeans offers freedom of movement, ideal for weekend activities such as running errands, meeting friends for brunch, or exploring the city. Pairing straight-leg jeans with a simple T-shirt or cozy sweater creates a laid-back vibe that is both comfortable and chic. Add sneakers or flats for a casual touch, or dress it up with ankle boots for a more polished appearance. The versatility of the straight leg jean outfit allows for easy transition from day to night, making it a practical and stylish choice for any weekend adventure.
Office Outfits
Creating a professional yet stylish outfit with jeans for the office is all about balancing sophistication with comfort. Start by selecting a pair of well-fitted, dark-wash straight-leg jeans with minimal distressing for a polished look. Pair them with a crisp button-down shirt or a tailored blouse for a sophisticated touch. Layer a structured blazer over the top to add structure and polish to the outfit. Complete the look with classic pumps or loafers for a professional finish. Accessorize minimally with simple jewelry and a sleek handbag to maintain a refined aesthetic. This combination of tailored pieces with straight-leg jeans strikes the perfect balance between professionalism and comfort, making it suitable for a day at the office.
Date Night Outfits
Creating a stylish but romantic date night look with straight-leg jeans is easy. Start by choosing black denim or a pair in a dark wash with a flattering fit. Pair them with a feminine blouse or a silky camisole for an elegant touch. Then you can add a statement leather jacket or a tailored blazer for a chic edge. Complete the outfit with heels or ankle boots to elongate the legs and accessorize with delicate jewelry and a clutch purse to add some glamour.
Shoes To Wear With Your Straight Leg Jeans
With straight-leg jeans, you have a variety of shoe options to choose from depending on the occasion and your personal style. Ultimately, the choice of shoes depends on the overall aesthetic you want to achieve and the occasion you’re dressing for. Experimenting with different shoe styles can help you create the perfect outfit. Here are some popular choices.
Sneakers
Sneakers offer a casual and comfortable look that pairs well with straight-leg denim for everyday wear or a relaxed vibe.
Loafers/Mules
Loafers and mules are another option that can effortlessly elevate the look of straight-leg jeans, providing a modern and chic touch. I’m obsessing over loafers right now, and they’re my favorite shoes to wear for comfort and style.
Sandals
Strappy sandals or slide sandals can give your straight-leg jeans a summery and laid-back feel during warmer months.
Heels
Opting for heels, such as pumps or block heels, can dress up straight-leg jeans and add a touch of sophistication for a more formal occasion. Kitten heels can give you the same elevated look while being much easier to walk around in.
Boots
Ankle boots add a touch of sophistication to straight-leg jeans and are perfect for transitioning your outfit from day to night. They are also typically easier to walk around in. And, a pointed toe will also give the illusion of longer legs, making them a good choice.
Ballet Flats
Ballet flats or loafers offer a classic and polished look when paired with straight-leg jeans. They’re perfect for a casual yet put-together outfit. They are also a great choice for when you need the comfort of a sneaker but want your outfit to be more elevated.
Having Fun
Whether you prefer a casual daytime look or a more polished outfit for an evening out, straight-leg jeans are a versatile option that can effortlessly adapt to any occasion.
