How To Find Style Inspiration In Four Easy Steps
Someone’s style is a personal choice in how they want to represent themselves to the world. Developing your own style takes time and usually happens over the years of learning what you like and don’t like. Style preferences also change with time, depending on the season of the year, or the stage of life you’re in. A student, corporate professional, stay-at-home mom, or a person who works from home will dress very differently to fit their identity.
Whatever your current style is, there usually comes a point where we feel like how we dress is stale, boring, and in need of a revamp. And if that’s where you’re at right now, then you’ve come to the right place for ideas on how to find new style inspiration.
How To Find Style Inspiration
People You Know
The easiest place to start looking for fashion inspiration is within your circle of friends, family members, and acquaintances. Is there anyone whose fashion sense you admire? If so, pay attention to what it is about their style that really stands out to you. It could be the way they style their hair, the way they coordinate colors, or a particular style of pants they favor. You can use these observations as a starting point in developing your own personal style.
Go Window Shopping
Window shopping is a great way to gather inspiration and ideas without having to actually spend any money. Check out designer stores small boutiques and the mall. You can get a very good idea of what’s currently in style by paying attention to what the mannequins are wearing and what’s on display
Search Online
There really isn’t much that you can’t find online. Pinterest is a great search engine that has a photo of just about anything you can think of. It’s also my favorite place to look for new outfit ideas. Not sure where to even start? Think of an item you really like, for example, we’ll use white boots. Then search for white boots with pants, shorts, dresses, and so on.
Online fashion blogs and magazines are also good sources to look for style inspiration. One of my favorite blogs is sincerelyjules.com. Everything she wears is beautiful and her outfits are put together so well. You can also look up photos of your favorite celebrities and pull inspo from their everyday style.
Create A Mood Board
Collect Images.
Creating a mood board is a great way to put all your ideas into one place so you can have a clear picture of what style you’re going for. Gather photos across social media, from online websites, and magazines. Pick out the photos that really stand out the most to you and compile them onto a board. This can be done on a website like Canva or Photoshop, or if you have the paper pictures, on an actual board.
Look For Themes.
Once you have all of your photos added to your board, start looking for common themes. Even if your style picks seem random and all over the place, there is probably a common color palette to start with. Other themes could be outfits that favor jeans, or dresses. Are they tight or loose-fitting? Or perhaps you’re favoring outfits that are preppy, casual, or sporty,
Make Several Boards.
Because different outfits are needed for different occasions and seasons, making a couple of boards is a good way to differentiate what you need. You can have a board for “winter outfits”, ‘summer outfits”, “special occasions” and “work”.
Narrow Your Options.
Once you have that figured out, pick just a few photos that represent the overall style that you’re trying to achieve and keep them on your phone or with you while shopping. That way you can easily look at them for reference.
