How To Stay Stylish At Home With These 12 Easy Tips
After 20 years as a stay-at-home/work-from-home mom, one thing I know is how to feel good about the way we look while at home. It doesn’t really matter if you work from home, are a full-time mom, or perhaps are only at home in the evening and on weekends. I believe looking good while being comfortable is something we all want.
To be honest, there have been many days over the years that I didn’t want to change out of my house robe. Not to mention all the old sweat pants and ratty sweaters I would insist on holding on to. Over time I began to notice how my mood would change depending on what I wore. On the days I stayed in my robe, my mind would associate that with being lazy, and true enough, I would be unproductive. On the other hand, spending the day dressed in old sweats had me feeling down and negatively impacted my self-image. Over time I was able to find the balance between comfort, feeling good, and looking good. I have also noticed the way that this has changed my mindset on kids, work, home life, and self-image. With that being said, here are some of the top things I’ve come to learn.
How To Stay Stylish At Home
Develop A Skincare Routine
To start off, never underestimate the difference a good skincare routine will have on your everyday appearance. Glowing skin is the foundation for looking good at home or out and about. With or without additional makeup.
Get Dressed
Even though staying in your pajamas all day is understandably tempting, changing out of them in the morning will help you be more productive. We also tend to feel better once we pull ourselves together for the day.
Do Your Makeup
Unless you feel like it, doing a full face of makeup is probably unnecessary. However, spending a few minutes putting on some undereye concealer, mascara, and blush will have you feeling better and looking more put together. Especially if you have a video call for work.
Black Leggings
Going out in your favorite skinny jeans with the perfect high waist will let you feel confident and sexy. But nothing beats a pair of leggings when it comes to being super comfy while chasing after little ones, hanging out on the couch, or working in your home office.
Wear A White Shirt
Wearing a white top, whether it be a super soft, plain t-shirt or a crisp button-down shirt, is an easy way to feel put together. This is especially true if you’re working from home. A white fitted shirt is an appropriate business casual look perfect for a day of zoom calls.
Let Go Of Dated Clothes
Go through your closet and remove items that have stains, tears, or are no longer in style. Only keeping the clothes that are in good condition is an easy way to make sure you’re always looking good.
Invest In Quality
There is absolutely never a need for every item in your closet to be designer or expensive. However, investing a little more in a few items could really elevate your look. Quality over quantity really does make a difference here. Go for a couple of high-quality shirts, and sweaters that fit perfectly, and stay away from current trends. Instead, look for classic styles in neutral colors that you’ll be able to wear again and again and never go out of style.
Embrace Loungewear
I’m not talking about old sweatpants and worn-out sweaters. The new loungewear is comfortable, but you also look good and feel good while wearing it. These matching sets are probably the absolute easiest way to be comfy and look good at home.
Dress For Your Shape
It really doesn’t matter what body shape you have. Not all clothes complement every body shape. Learning what clothes look best on your body shape will help ensure you don’t buy clothes that end up in the back of your closet unworn. Here’s a video that does a good job explaining how to dress for each body shape.
Stay Neutral
Wearing too many colors at one time tends to look chaotic. If you like wearing bright shades, or even pastels, keep it to one at a time. Not counting black and white. Neutrals are always chic and sophisticated. They can be worn on their own or mixed in with more colorful outfits because they pair well with everything. This makes it very easy to plan an outfit without having to put a lot of thought into it.
Add A Few Accessories
You may not want to wear a ton of jewelry while at home, but a few small, dainty pieces are an easy way to feel extra put together and gorgeous. I have a few small rings, necklaces earrings, and bracelets that I rarely ever take off. This makes it so there’s one less thing for me to think about while getting dressed every day.
Style Your Hair
Keeping your hair styled is probably the one thing that will make the biggest difference in your daily appearance. Investing in the right tools will make doing your own hair quick and easy. Not to be dramatic, but the Double Shot Blow-Dry Brush was life-changing for me. In addition, headbands and claw clips are also easy effortless ways to upgrade your hair game.
Best At Home Outfits
Accessories
You can wear single pieces of jewelry or delicate stacks to instantly upgrade even the most simple of home outfits. I always have on some diamond stud earrings, some stacked bracelets, necklaces a few very thing gold bands on my fingers. If I’m leaving the house I may add a few larger rings.
Loungewear
Elevated loungewear really took off during the pandemic. Although it’s been a few years now, I think it’s safe to say, it’s here to stay. Because it falls somewhere between sleepwear and athleisure wear, it’s ultra comfortable but can also be worn to exercise in, work from home, or run errands outside the house.
Hair
No one really wants to spend large amounts of time doing their hair every day. Master a few easy hairstyles that can be done in moments. Low buns and slick ponytails are always a good choice. Lastly, a few hair accessories like headbands and claw clips will keep your hair under control and looking polished.
Elevated Basics
Upgrade your basic jeans, shirts, and sweaters for a look that’s understated but chic. Without a doubt, denim is way less comfortable than leggings or joggers. And for this reason, jeans are a better choice for the days you want to really get a lot done. This makes it one of the best working-from-home outfits.
