Mermaid Hair In Maui | Styling Hair In Tropical Weather
To end 2021 and bring in the new year, a few friends and I decided to fly over to Maui. The island of Maui has been a second home to me for the last 20 years and is very dear to my heart. Because I spend so much time here, I know exactly where to shop, where I can eat, and a list of favorite beaches to chill out on. Whenever I’m here I throw all my schedules and most to-do’s out the window and relax as much as possible. That includes what I wear, how I do my makeup, and of course how I style my hair.
In fact, while I’m here I don’t use any heat tools at all. Daily swimming means I would have to restyle my hair every single day. Ain’t nobody got time for that! Even if there is a day I decide to skip jumping in the ocean, the humidity will quickly undo all my efforts. Over the last two decades of vacationing on this beautiful island, I’ve learned a few things about managing and styling hair in tropical weather. After all, just because I’m trying to relax, doesn’t mean I no longer care about how I look. So here are my 5 tips for styling hair in the tropics.

Deep Condition
After washing your hair, always use a good hair conditioner. Dry hair absorbs more moisture out of the air. This causes the hair shaft to swell and disrupt the cuticles leading to dreaded frizz. The dryer your hair is the more it will be affected by the humidity. So, never skimp on the conditioner or hair treatments.
Rinse With Cold Water
After rinsing all the conditioner out of your hair give it one final rinse with cold water. Cold water closes the hair cuticles, laying them down flat. Not only does this reduce frizz, but it also makes your hair super shiny. The 30 seconds of torturous cold water running down your back actually has a big payoff!
Air Dry Your Hair
After getting out of the shower, skip the blow dryer. Gently pat your hair with a towel, or even better a microfiber hair towel that’s specially designed to help reduce frizz and breakage. Never rub a towel roughly through your hair. It will only rough up the cuticle setting you up for big-time frizz.
Hair Oil
While your hair is still slightly damp apply a small amount of hair oil to your hair focusing on the bottom half. Lightweight hair serums like Moroccanoil or Gisou Honey Infused Hair Oil conditions dry ends, smooths hair, and tames flyaways.
Heatless Waves
This one is a new tip for me that I’ve just started experimenting with, but so far I’m happy. You need to do this in the evening once you’re in for the night. After washing your hair, comb through it with a detangler then allow it to air dry until it’s just slightly damp. Rub a small amount of hair oil between your palms then smooth it through your hair. Next part your hair down the middle and start wrapping small sections of hair around the heatless curling rod. Secure your hair at the end of each rod and on the top of your head. Sleep with it in your hair through the night. In the morning take out the curling rod and run your fingers through your waves. Done!
