Make Healthy Food Choices
Overall gut health is crucial to maintaining hormone levels and healthy skin. As much as you can, minimize the amount of sugar you eat as well as cut down on fried greasy food. Eat more whole foods like fruits and vegetables. Not only are they easier for your body to digest, but they also provide essential vitamins and minerals. If your skin feels dull and lackluster, start with these vegan foods for gut health.
Exercise Regularly
Regular exercise is one of the top daily habits that will make your skin glow. It provides many health benefits including helping to manage stress levels. High levels of stress hormones can cause annoying breakouts, but keeping it regulated can go a long way in maintaining skin health. Breaking a sweat will help flush out toxins from your body, and instantly give you a healthy glow. Just be sure to always shower immediately after working out. Dry sweat can breed bacteria on your skin and cause breakouts.
Take Your Daily Vitamins
Consuming the recommended daily value (RDV) of the essential vitamins and minerals is key for maintaining glowing skin. Certain vitamins and minerals, such as niacin, biotin, and vitamins B6, C, D, and E, do wonders in the body to promote soft, clear, and healthy-looking skin tones. Plus, other nutrients, such as iron, selenium, zinc, magnesium, and probiotics, promote a healthy gut. And a healthy gut is directly tied to healthier skin. To support glowing skin, consider adding both a daily vitamin and a daily probiotic to your diet.
Always Apply Sunscreen
Always apply sunscreen when you’re spending time outdoors. It’s an essential step in protecting your skin from harmful UV rays, the damaging effects of the sun, and possibly even skin cancer. Sun exposure can cause signs of premature aging, like fine lines and hyperpigmentation.
It’s especially important if you use skincare products containing AHA’s BHA’S, Retinol, Salicylic Acid, Hyaluronic acid, or Benzoyl Peroxide. While these ingredients are all useful in treating various skin conditions, they will make you photosensitive and prone to sunburn even faster. Wearing sunscreen is a crucial last step in any good skincare routine.
Remove Your Makeup Before Bed
No matter how tired you might be, never ever ever go to bed with your makeup on. Sleeping with your makeup on will cause all sorts of problems, starting with clogged pores and breakouts. Leaving mascara on through the night will make undereye circles appear darker no matter how many hours of sleep you get.
Every night before bed, double cleanse your face starting with a cleansing balm or oil to help melt away all sunscreen and makeup. Follow that by washing your face with a facial cleanser appropriate for your skin type or skin condition you’re trying to correct. Avoid Scrubbing Your Face When Cleansing
When cleansing your face, its important to avoid any harsh scrubbing. Scrubbing roughly and/or using certain towels or brushes can irritate the skin, scratch off healing acne, and leave redness and inflammation. All of which leads to dull and unhealthy skin.
Instead, opt for a gentle cleanser and choose a soft facial washcloth or cleansing brush (like the Luna 3 for Sensitive Skin). Then, gently cleanse the face by moving your fingers in small circles, taking care to get into all those smaller facial crevices.
Proper Skincare
Everyone’s skin is different. Someone with oily skin shouldn’t be using the same skin care products as a person with dry skin. If you have a hard time figuring out the best types of products for your skin type, it’s a good idea to consult an aesthetician or dermatologist for guidance. Also, something to keep in mind is that our skincare needs to change with the seasons. A product that works well in the summer might not be the best option come winter.
Exfoliate Weekly
Regularly exfoliating your skin will help remove any layers of dry skin and dead skin cells, leaving you glowing. Decide if physical or chemical exfoliators are better suited to your skin type, and be sure not to overdo it. Once or twice a week is usually sufficient. Exfoliating isn’t just for your face either. You can achieve a full-body glow from good body scrubbing. Dry brushing offers many additional health benefits, or you can use a sugar scrub or hand mitt during your shower. After exfoliating, always follow up with a hydrating facial oil or serum. Vitamin C serums, specifically, are usually very effective at replenishing the skin after exfoliation.
Get Enough Sleep
Getting adequate amounts of quality sleep is necessary if you want to have beautiful skin. Our entire body, even our skin, uses this time to heal and regenerate. It’s also the best time to let skincare products soak in and work their magic. The signs of poor sleep will quickly show up as dark circles, sullen skin, and premature skin aging. You should try and aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night. And if sleep is something you struggle with, you can read some of my top tips for a good night’s sleep here.
Avoid Picking At Your Skin
This one is most certainly easier said than done. Picking at your skin can be super temping when dealing with breakouts, but believe me when I say, it can be very detrimental to your skin. Other than simply damaging your skin, it can cause cause scarring, dark spots, and even infection in the follicle. So, try to avoid picking at your skin at all, but especially on your face.
