Weekly Hair Routine – And Products I’m Currently Loving
I know that some people may think that my hair washing routine is a bit excessive. It definitely takes more time than your typical wash and go routine. But I think that anyone who’s struggled with ongoing hair issues, especially autoimmune-related, understands that the extra time and effort can really make a huge difference. As with most things in life, consistency is key when it comes to seeing results.
Because this does take up more time, my hair washing day is a day that I know I’ll be mostly home. Because I only wash my hair once a week, that’s pretty manageable. In between treatments, I do computer work or other work around the house. If for some reason I don’t have the available time, then I just wash and condition like normal. I’ll try again the following week to do my full routine.
The Weekly Hair Routine
Oil Treatment
The first thing I do on wash day is oil my scalp with a mixture of coconut and castor oil mixed with a few drops of lavender and tea tree essential oils. I apply this to my entire scalp and massage it in, then run my hands through to the bottom of my hair to coat my strands. Hair is then clipped up and left to soak for at least 20 minutes to an hour, depending on how much time I have.
Wash
When the time is up on the oil mask, it’s time to shampoo it out. Double washing may be necessary if you have a lot of oil in your hair. I recently switched back to Pureology because it’s sulfate-free, as well as paraben-free, vegan, and safe for color-treated hair. From time to time I like to try new shampoo brands, but I always end up back with Pureology. If you’re looking for a new shampoo to try, this is one that I’d recommend.
Strengthening Hair Mask
After stepping out of the shower, I towel dry my hair and then apply the Don’t Despair Repair Rice Water Protein + Moisture Strengthening Treatment from Briogeo. It’s a weekly protein and moisture treatment that uses rice water to strengthen and moisturize hair. After generously applying to damp hair, I let it sit for at least 10 minutes although if time allows I’ll keep it in longer. The directions say it can be left on overnight. I’ve been using it for about two months now and have noticed a big difference in my hair, especially in how much less the ends are snapping.
Leave-In Conditioning Mask
After rinsing out the Protein mask I’ll either use Soulfood Nourishing Hair Mask from Amika or the Hydrate Conditioner from Pureology. Either way, I apply it to damp hair and let it sit for a minimum of 15 minutes, longer if I have the time. Then once again rinse it out with warm water afterward.
Blow Dry With Heat Protectant
Before blowdrying my hair I use Resistance Heat Protecting Leave-In Treatment to help prevent any heat damage. For my birthday I bought myself a Dyson Airwrap and am trying to use it to do my hair. But to be honest I prefer my Double Shot Blow-Dryer Brush. I find it to be way easier to use and it’s a fraction of the price. But because the Dyson supposedly uses technology that allows styling without extreme heat, I’ll continue trying to get the hang of using it.
Curl
I prefer to curl my hair with a larger barrel and have loose waves. I’ve noticed when I curl my hair the day after I wash it, the curls stay for pretty much the whole week. Depending on how quickly I need my hair done, this isn’t always an option, as I try not to use heat tools more than one time per week.
I want to say that’s it, but I know it’s a lot! But anyhow, this is my exact hair care routine right now. And I have to say it’s been working great!
